Kate Chaney MP is the Independent Federal Member for Curtin in Western Australia, first elected to Parliament in 2022. Raised in the electorate, where she has also brought up her children, she brings experience in law, business and community services to her parliamentary work. Before entering politics, she worked as a lawyer and strategy consultant, developed sustainability and reconciliation initiatives at Wesfarmers, and managed strategy and innovation at Anglicare WA. These roles gave her experience in addressing complex problems, consulting with communities and building agreement between people with different perspectives.
As a community independent, Chaney advocates for decisions guided by evidence, consultation and Australia’s long-term needs. Her priorities include housing affordability, climate action, economic reform, safer technology and greater integrity in politics. She emphasises working constructively across party lines while remaining accountable to the people of Curtin. For this Reddit AMA, she joins the community to answer questions about her policy priorities, the challenges facing Western Australia, and her experiences representing an electorate outside the major parties. Participants can also ask about her transition into politics and how independent MPs can influence legislation and government decisions.
