Why Are The Protests In Albania Happening?

01 Why Are Albanians Protesting

At the centre of these protests is a proposal that supporters describe as an opportunity for investment and tourism, but critics see as a threat to Albania’s future. The most high-profile of these projects involves plans for luxury resort developments on Sazan Island and Narta Lagoon. Sazan is a strategically located island at the entrance to the Adriatic Sea, but more on that later. Other major developments have also been proposed across Albania, feeding concerns that the country’s natural and historical assets are increasingly being opened to powerful private interests without sufficient scrutiny.

For many Albanian activists, the issue goes far beyond a single resort. One of the biggest concerns is a lack of transparency. Protesters argue that key decisions affecting public land and national assets have been made behind closed doors, with limited information available to ordinary citizens. They are asking simple but important questions: Who benefits from these deals? What obligations are attached to them? And why haven’t Albanians been given a greater voice in decisions that could reshape their country’s future?

Environmental concerns have also become a major rallying point. Sazan Island is not just another piece of real estate. It is home to unique ecosystems and forms part of a region rich in biodiversity and cultural significance. Activists fear that large-scale development could cause irreversible damage to landscapes that belong not only to the present generation, but to future generations as well.

There are also allegations of corruption and preferential treatment. Protesters claim that wealthy investors and politically connected figures appear to receive special access and advantages that ordinary citizens could never hope to obtain. Whether these allegations are ultimately proven or not, the perception of unequal treatment has fuelled public anger and deepened distrust in institutions.

These demonstrations are also being driven by broader frustrations that have been building for years. Many Albanians have become disillusioned by concerns over governance, accountability and the feeling that their voices are too often ignored. For them, these protests are not simply about opposing a construction project.

They are about defending national sovereignty, protecting public assets and deciding what kind of country Albania wants to be. In the eyes of many protesters, this is a struggle over identity itself: who has the right to shape Albania’s future, and whether the people of Albania will have the final say.
