In 1996, Advance Institute of Business General Manager Craig Hill took on the position of Regional Waste Disposal Manager for NSW Health, based at Goulburn Hospital.
This position involved writing new guidelines for the collection and destruction of infectious and contaminated material such as blood bandages and sharps (needles) in hospitals nd health care facilities throughout the southern region of NSW. It also involved education sessions with all staff about these new procedures, and supervising staff responsible for the collection of these materials.
This was due to several incidents of staff having come into phyical contact with blood bandages and several needle stick incidents involving staff.
A new incinerator was built at the Goulburn Hospital to facilitate the burning of these materials, with a pre-burner burning the solid materials at 800 degrees Celsius, and an after-burner burning the gases at 1200 degrees Celsius. This was necessary as some infectious organisms could survive the initial burn of 800 degrees.
The facility was also utilised by local police to burn illegal drugs after court cases had been completed.
