
Here are some of the events that happened on this day in Australian history. Please feel free to add others that you know of in the comments section.
- 1824 – Explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell arrive in the area the Aborigines call Corayo on a bay called Jillong.
- 1929 – Rothbury Riot in which police shoot at locked out miners, killing Norman Brown.
- 1936 – A Brisbane to Adelaide air race is held to commemorate South Australia’s centenary.
- 1947 – The reconstructed Regent Theatre, Melbourne opens after it was destroyed by fire in 1945.
- 1948 – HMAS Sydney (pictured), the first aircraft carrier of the Royal Australian Navy, is commissioned (read the full story here).
International Observances.
- Day of Reconciliation, formerly celebrated as Day of the Vow by the Afrikaners (South Africa)
- Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Kazakhstan from the Soviet Union in 1991.
- National Day, celebrates the withdrawal of United Kingdom from Bahrain, making Bahrain an independent emirate in 1971.
- National Sports Day (Thailand)
- The beginning of the nine-day celebration beginning December 16 and ending December 24, celebrating the trials which Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay where Jesus could be born (Hispanidad):
– The first day of Las Posadas (Mexico, Latin America)
– The first day of the Simbang Gabi novena of masses (Philippines) - Victory Day (Bangladesh) and Victory Day (India)
