1 November in Australian History

Here are some of the events that happened on this day in Australian history. Please feel free to add others that you know of in the comments section.

  • 1791 – A party of twenty-one convicts escape from Port Jackson and (with an obviously limited knowledge of Australian geography) attempt to walk to China. Some die in the wilderness, while others are recaptured.
  • 1792 – The Philadelphia becomes the first foreign trading vessel to visit Sydney.
  • 1853 – The first postage stamps of Tasmania are issued.
  • 1914 – The first contingent of the First Australian Imperial Force leaves for Egypt.
  • 1916 – a general coal strike began in eastern Australia.
  • 1926 – General Motors opens assembly plants in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
  • 1940 – Aviator Guy Menzies is killed when his flying boat is shot down over Italy.
  • 1945 – Australia becomes a founding member of the United Nations (picture: Deputy PM Frank Forde signing UN Charter, 1945) (read the full story here).
  • 1967 – Pop singer Tina Arena is born in Moonee Ponds.
  • 1972 – Actress Toni Collette is born in Blacktown, New South Wales.
  • 1986 – Joh Bjelke-Petersen wins his final election as Premier of Queensland with his party, the National Party, gaining 38.6% of the vote.
  • 1990 – The Australian domestic aviation market is deregulated.
  • 2005 – Makybe Diva wins her third Melbourne Cup.

International Observances.

  • All Saints’ Day, a holy day of obligation in some areas (a national holiday in many historically Catholic countries), and its related observance:
    – Day of the Innocents, The first day of Day of the Dead or El Dia de los Muertos celebration. (Mexico, Haiti)
  • Anniversary of the Revolution (Algeria)
  • Chavang Kut (Mizo people of Northeast India, Bangladesh, Burma)
  • Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava (Chhattisgarh, India)
  • Coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo (Bhutan)
  • Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Antigua and Barbuda from the United Kingdom in 1981.
  • Karnataka Rajyotsava (Karnataka, India)
  • Kerala Day (Kerala, India)
  • Liberty Day (United States Virgin Islands)
  • International Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Awareness Day
  • National Brush Day (United States)
  • National Awakening Day (Bulgaria)
  • Self-Defense Forces Commemoration Day (Japan)
  • The first day of winter observances:
    – Calan Gaeaf, celebrations start at sunset of October 31. (Wales)
    – Samhain in the Northern Hemisphere and Beltane in the Southern Hemisphere, celebrations start at sunset of October 31 (Neopagan Wheel of the Year)
  • World Vegan Day
