- 1938 – Kyeema air disaster kills 18 in Mount Dandenong, Victoria (pictured: VH-UYC aircraft which was involved in the crash) (read the full story here).
- 1941 – Singer Helen Reddy is born in Melbourne.
- 1990 – Nelson Mandela visits the Parliament of Victoria, eight-and-a-half months after his release from prison in South Africa.
- 2003 – Australia defeat Namibia in the 2003 Rugby World Cup by a record 142 points to nil.
- 2004 – A car bomb explodes near the Australian embassy in Baghdad, killing several Iraqi civilians and injuring three Australian soldiers
