- 1814 – Admiral Arthur Phillip, British naval officer and Governor of New South Wales, dies at Bath, England aged 75.
- 1918 – The Battle of Mont St. Quentin, a famous Australian action under the leadership of Lieutenant General Sir John Monash, begins.
- 1945 – The Liberal Party of Australia is founded by Robert Menzies (pictured) (read the full story here).
- 1985 – Death of Frank Macfarlane Burnet, Australian biologist, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

- Day of Solidarity and Freedom (Poland)
- Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Kyrgyzstan from the Soviet Union in 1991.
- Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Malaya from the United Kingdom in 1957.
- Independence Day, celebrates the independence of Trinidad and Tobago from the United Kingdom in 1962.
