- 1916 – Claude Charles Castleton killed in the Battle of Pozières and for his actions in bringing back wounded men before and at the time of his death, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
- 1948 – Writer and satirist John Clarke is born in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
- 2001 – Swimmer Grant Hackett (pictured) sets a world record in the 1500 m freestyle at Fukuoka, Japan.
- 2005 – Lachlan Murdoch announces that he will be resigning from executive roles with News Corporation and moving with his family to Australia.
International Observances.
- Earliest day on which Somer’s Day can fall, while August 4 is the latest; celebrated on Friday before the first Monday in August. (Bermuda)
