- 1842 – Mary MacKillop (pictured), the only Australian to be canonised, is born in Fitzroy, Victoria.
- 1944 – Australian 9th Division capture the town of Sio destroying the Japanese 20th Division in the protracted Huon Peninsula Campaign.
- 1944 – The destroyer HMAS Bataan is launched by the wife of US General Douglas MacArthur.
- 1987 – Greg Inglis, rugby league player for the Melbourne Storm, is born in Kempsey, New South Wales.
